Why is my new adventure not showing up in FATMAP?
If you have connected your Suunto account and you recorded a new adventure, but are not seeing it in My Adventures in FATMAP, it could be one of a few things:
- The most common and likely issue is that your watch has not synced with your Suunto phone app OR that your Suunto phone app has not uploaded the track to Suunto's servers. This could be due to lack of internet connection (as we all know happens in the great outdoors), the app not being open on your phone, or the watch failing to sync to the phone. Make sure the phone app is open and you see the adventure in your Suunto account. As an additional step, click the watch icon in the top left corner and hit 'Sync Now' to reprompt a sync
- Another possibility is that the adventure you recorded was of a type that FATMAP does not support. The most common activity which FATMAP would ignore is one with no geospatial component such as any indoor activity like indoor cycling, yoga, etc. When FATMAP receives an activity like this, we ignore it.
- Additionally, it could be that not enough time has passed. While our tests show that this service is quite fast and should bring in adventures from Suunto within a minute from syncing it to the Suunto cloud, it is highly dependent on the amount of activities that need to be processed. As a general rule of thumb, if you know your Suunto app has uploaded the activity to Suunto and you still do not see your adventure in FATMAP after 15 minutes, there could be an internal issue - feel free to reach out to us!
- Finally, as with any prolonged issue you are experiencing in FATMAP, feel free to check out the FATMAP status page or reach out to us directly and we will look into it right away.
Does FATMAP bring in any old Suunto activities or just newly recorded ones?
For now, once you connect your Suunto account, FATMAP will bring in the last 200 activities over the last 2 years from your Suunto account. In other words, we take the past two years of data or the last 200 activities - whichever comes first. These activities should start to roll into your account as soon as you sign up and are usually all in My Adventures within about 15 minutes (usually faster than this) depending on how many activities you have done in the last 2 years. In addition, of course, every newly recorded activity after you connect your Suunto and FATMAP accounts will come into FATMAP automagically
How do I know when my new activity is in FATMAP?
Once we process a new Suunto activity of yours, we will send you an email telling you that a new Suunto activity was just added to your FATMAP account and is ready to view and share!
How can I manage my incoming Adventure Visibility with Suunto?
[NEW!] In the latest version of FATMAP, we have added visibility controls to your Suunto connection. Follow these steps to change the visibility options for future Suunto adventures:
- Travel to Profile > Settings
- Then click on Tracking Apps & Devices
- Click Manage Suunto (this will show if you have already connected Suunto to your FATMAP account)
- Finally, click the option for Who can see future Suunto recordings? and change to the option that suits you
Can other people see these new adventures from my Suunto account?
You are now able to choose who can see your Suunto adventures when they come into FATMAP. This option is available to choose both during sign-up and after! A few things to keep in mind:
- This decision is what the 'default visibility' will be on any new adventure that comes in. You can always edit any adventure's visibility by clicking the three dots on that adventure in My Adventures. Put simply: this decision isn't set in stone.
- Any time you change this option, it only applies to adventures moving forward. For example, if you have already signed up for Suunto and you go to 'Manage Suunto' and change this option, existing adventures that have come in from Suunto will not change. Any time you alter this choice, it affects any adventure that gets imported from that point forward.
- Allowing the FATMAP community to see your adventures does not mean those lines will show up when someone is simply browsing the map. When someone publishes an activity(currently only done on web), this is when it is visible on the map to the whole world. When you allow the FATMAP community to see your adventures, it would only show up if they follow you, if they click on your account and check out your Activity Feed, or if they are using the FATMAP feed in your area.
Does all of my health data like heart rate (HR), speed, cadence, and effort come into FATMAP?
Technically yes but we don't use any of it. At FATMAP, we are purists for the outdoors. We care about people getting outside, period. Competitive stats about how fast you did something or how high your heart rate was is not on our radar. We want you to be able to see what you did in 3D, share that with your outdoor community, and analyze that in whatever way you want - how steep was the beginning of that hike, what was your highest elevation, etc.
We bring in the geometry of the line, the timer time on your watch, and the type of activity - that's it! The other stats are calculated and crunched by the FATMAP 3D engine you know and love.
Will the stats that my device records be exactly the same as what shows on FATMAP?
Short answer: Yes, for some things
Long answer: At FATMAP, we love our 3D map and elevation model - it is what FATMAP is built on. We use this model to calculate statistics for lines. This allows us to calculate the statistics for something you are planning and are not sure about. For adventures (stuff you have recorded) the distance, ascent, and descent will be exactly the same on FATMAP as your device records. As of August 5th, 2021, we changed our ingestion pipeline to start writing this information so that we can prefer this info to the info we calculate in the background. If your device does not contain this info or it was corrupted for some reason, we will show you our calculated statistics for that number instead. So any adventure you have done after this date will show these values exactly as your watch recorded them.
There are still some data fields that we use our calculated statistics for. Most notably the gradient and elevation profiles. We still use our elevation model to generate these so that the 3D view of the line and the graph of the data align correctly.
Will there be duplicate adventures if my Suunto, Strava, and FATMAP accounts are all connected to each other?
Great question - yes. We try to make as few assumptions as possible when we build our software. One of those assumptions is that you, the user, knows which accounts are connected where. If your Suunto account is connected to Strava, and your Strava account is connected to FATMAP, your Suunto data may have already been coming in. However, if you connect you Suunto account directly to FATMAP now, all of those adventures are going to come into your FATMAP account also. If you keep both of these connected, then you will see duplicates.
To avoid this, simply sever the connection on one of the branches. From what we have seen, directly connecting your watch's third-party to FATMAP yields a faster result. This is because it is only going between two APIs instead of three. However, the decision is all yours. It is just good to note that if you do see duplicates of your adventures with slightly different names, this could be why!
